We know that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is not something any pet owner likes to think about but sadly making the decision to euthanise (put to sleep) is often the kindest one.

We have created this page to inform you about the euthanasia process, what you should expect and how we can support you through the experience.

What is Euthanasia?

Euthanasia is a gentle medical procedure used to peacefully and painlessly end a pet's life. It is often referred to as "putting a pet to sleep" and is performed to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering when there is no reasonable prospect of recovery or when a pet's quality of life has deteriorated.

The word euthanasia means a painless death. While it is an incredibly difficult decision to make, it is also one of the greatest acts of love and kindness you can give your pet, allowing them to pass away peacefully and with dignity.

Arranging a Euthanasia Appointment

Once you feel the time is right, please contact the practice to arrange an appointment. We try to book these appointments during quieter times of the day to provide you with as much privacy and comfort as possible.

If you would prefer your pet to be put to sleep at home, please let us know when you contact us. We will do our very best to accommodate your request wherever possible. We can also discuss the aftercare options if so wished at this point.

What to Expect on the Day

At the Appointment

Euthanasia is a peaceful and gentle procedure where an injection is given, putting your pet into a deep sleep before their heart stops and they pass away. This usually happens very quickly, often while the injection is still being administered. When you arrive for the appointment, the vet will first explain the procedure to you so that you know what to expect. The euthanasia process can vary depending on your pet’s individual needs and circumstances. Our priority is to ensure we do what is best for your pet whilst keeping them as comfortable and stress free as possible throughout. We will also talk you through the options for your pet’s aftercare and discuss the arrangements that feel most appropriate for you. Once everything is ready, the vet and nurse will be there to support you and your pet .You will be asked to sign a form to indicate that you give us permission to proceed. You may be able to hold, stroke or comfort your pet while the euthanasia injection is given, depending on individual circumstances and whatever you feel comfortable with. When your pet has peacefully passed away, the vet will confirm this to you and give you as much time as you need to say goodbye in private, should you wish.

Should I Stay with My Pet?

Whether you choose to stay with your pet during euthanasia is a very personal decision.

Some owners find comfort in being there until the very end, while others prefer to remember their pet as they were. There is no right or wrong choice.

If you decide not to stay, please be reassured that your pet will never be alone. They will be gently comforted and cared for by our experienced veterinary team throughout the procedure.

Aftercare Options

There are several options available for your pet's aftercare, and we'll help you choose whichever feels right for you and your family.

Keepsakes

Many owners find comfort in keeping a special memento of their pet.

We can arrange:

Paw prints

Nose prints

A clipping of fur

Please let us know if you would like any keepsakes before the procedure.

Home Burial

If you wish to bury your pet at home. We recommend you checking current government guidance to ensure it can be done safely and legally.

Cremation

We work with a trusted company called Pet Cremation Services to provide respectful and compassionate aftercare.

Ruislip and Harefield patients are cared for by Surrey Pet Crematorium.

Greenford patients are cared for by Newbury Pet Crematorium.

You can choose between:

Individual
Your pet is cremated individually, and their ashes will be returned to you in your chosen casket or scatter tube.

Communal Cremation
Your pet is cremated alongside other pets, and ashes are not returned.

Looking After Yourself

The loss of a pet is just as painful as losing a member of the family. Everyone grieves differently, and there is no right or wrong way to feel.

Please remember that you are not alone. This decision comes from a place of love, and our team is here to support you before, during and after saying goodbye.
